The Classic WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a great choice for people looking to breathe new life into worn-out tools and mechanical equipment. Certain projects do call for more specific formulas – and for these the WD-40 Specialist® line is ready to help. This summer, try out these two products below…each paired with ideas you can use to enter the Repair Challenge:

WD‑40 Specialist Contact Cleaner: A fast-drying, no mess formula designed to clean and maintain electronics and electrical equipment.

Restore Drone Electrical Connections

Drone hobbyists and videographers can restore and maintain their flying equipment by cleaning the circuit boards, connector pins, and wiring to keep them up in the air.

Why it matters: Dust, grease, and residue on contacts can cause misfires, unreliable sensors, or even shorts—Cleaning with WD‑40 Specialist Contact Cleaner removes all that without residue, so your drone flies smooth and safe.

Steps:

  • Capture a close-up of dusty/oxidized connectors before cleaning
  • Disconnect the battery and remove any protective casing.
  • Spray Contact Cleaner on connector pins, wiring, and board-edge slots.
  • Gently let it dry for a few minutes—no wiping needed.
  • Reassemble, install fresh batteries, and take it for a test flight.
  • Record before-after shots of the electronics and share the flight takeoff.

Refresh a Gaming Controller’s Buttons & Joysticks

Gamers, keep your trusty controller at the ready or restore ones from vintage consoles left in the attic. Clean contacts, triggers, and joystick mechanisms to eliminate stickiness, lag, or jitter.

Why it matters: Over time, oils from skin and airborne dust can gum up buttons and sensors. WD‑40 Specialist Contact Cleaner removes grime without harming delicate circuits—meaning smoother, more responsive gameplay.

Steps:

  • Open the controller’s shell carefully—save all screws.
  • Spray Contact Cleaner on each button contact and joystick sensor.
  • Work the controls to let cleaner penetrate.
  • Let it dry fully, then reassemble and test gameplay.

Capture the full process — from the gritty buttons to first smooth playthrough.

WD‑40 Specialist Penetrant with EZ-Reach®: A potent solution for busting rust and loosening stuck bolts and hardware, with an attached flexible 8-inch straw to access hard-to-reach places.

Rejuvenate a Lawn Mower’s Bolts & Engine Bracket

Prepare for summer yard maintenance by rejuvenating an old or used lawn mower. Use WD-40 Specialist Penetrant with EZ-Reach on engine mounting bolts, blade retainers, and pivot points to ensure smooth operation and safe mowing.

Why it matters: Corroded hardware leads to jerky control or, worse, blade failure. Penetrant busts rust and protects parts, giving an old mower a new lease on life.

Steps:

  • Clean visible debris around the bolts/brackets.
  • Spray Penetrant on each bolt/nut and let sit for ~5 minutes.
  • Gently loosen with a wrench.
  • Inspect for wear, replace if needed, then grease nut before reassembling.

Video tips: Grab shots of the rusted hardware before applying the penetrant formula. Show the spray application and loosening, then finish with the manicured lawn post-fix.

Penetrant Performance

Want to see WD-40 Specialist Penetrant in action before giving it a try? Check out this @MakeEverything video on YouTube where the spray is used to help restore a used drop trailer rated for hauling up to 7,000lbs. Some words from the creator:

  • “The penetrant spray really does a good job getting in there and that EZ-Reach nozzle allows me to get behind to the back of the bearings”
  • “I was able to knock the bearing off that was totally seized up.”
  • “I used a lot of WD-40 Brand Products to get the various stuck and broken pieces off of this trailer, and wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

The Repair Challenge: Get Inspired

Each of these ideas highlights the heart of the WD‑40 Brand Repair Challenge: repair, reuse, reclaim. Rather than tossing old gear, you're restoring value, extending lifespan, and sharing your journey. The summer-specific theme adds flair—imagine a sunny backyard, a freshly tuned mower, or a drone cruising above green treetops—all perfect for engaging social media images or video clips.

Pro Tips for Stronger Repair Submissions:

  • Organize “Before” and “After” photos and videos along the way to assemble later for a crisp and compelling comparison.
  • Use tripod or steady surfaces for video to avoid shaky footage.
  • Add a short voice‑over explaining your steps to personalize the content and make your entry stand out.
  • Tag @WD40Brand on social and include the hashtag #WD40Repair to showcase your hard work!

Ready, Set, Repair

You’ve got until midnight on July 14, 2025 to complete your project, record it, and send it in. Grab your WD‑40 Specialist Contact Cleaner or Penetrant, pick a challenge above (or invent your own), and show us how you saved old gear for one more season of memories.  We can’t wait to see your fixes — and how you accomplished them.
